The way things are going, if I was in my "forever home" I'd be doing everything possible to become as energy-self-sufficient as possible. The elephant in the room with personal renewable energy is that at some point, the raw materials for batteries are ALSO going to become prohibitively expensive

. If you have the ability to take your home off-grid for energy and plan to stay there, it's an extremely sensible investment.
If buying outright rather than on a scheme it's probably worth it anyway, as they're likely to increase the selling price of the property, and then that extra can be used to fit new ones on the new property.
