If it had just been the slap I'd have thought it maybe was staged but the exchange afterwards it's pretty clear what's happened. Messy, really. He was laughing but Jada looked annoyed (tbf I can appreciate why, now knowing why her hair is short) but he's obviously then seen that she's upset and decided to do something about it. Their odd marital issues are probably all wrapped up in there too, things under the surface.
Chris Rock was clearly a bit shaken afterwards. I saw that "Saw" movie he was in - he's not that good an actor outside of comedy roles, no way he was faking that.
