We got one Christmas 2020 and to be fair my eldest does still use it a fair amount. But she has a long-standing "internet pals group" from all over the world who have been chatting for years, and I think going on VR stuff together adds an extra dimension to that for them, getting to "interact" in a virtual space rather than just calls and messages. I don't think it would have lasted long if it was just with her school friends.

Youngest just likes going on Job Simulator to trash the place, laugh at the mess, then done.

Safety warning though, the first time my eldest went on one of these was at a shopping mall display thing and she tried to lean on the non-existant counter in Job Simulator and fell flat on her face. I'm not going to pretend it wasn't hilarious to witness - but still... risky...
