TOS sure is better, and while it certainly couldn't be called "bland" it's got a slower style of storytelling per episode, and every episode is a standalone. Also there are virtually
no interpersonal conflicts, as in the future humanity has moved on beyond that. All the drama comes from outside, and the situations they're in.
