I guess as a compare and contrast, a depressant (weed, alcohol) helps people's anxieties by numbing them to it and taking away the adrenaline response. A stimulant (ritalin, caffeine etc.) can help anxiety by offering greater clarity of thought (so better ability to think rationally about those anxieties).

You can of course go too far with either and end up depressed ("down") or paranoid ("up") e.g. you don't really hear about people feeling relaxed on cocaine or meth
