No one has said they're not friends. They're not
besties. They're old friends and "first and foremost, work colleagues". Maybe you personally would say someone who says that about you can be a best friend ... if that's the case, you have my sympathies.
I do indeed have old friends who I'm very close with but now see no more than two or three times a year. They are indeed some of my best friends.
I would be gutted if they referred to me as "an old work colleague" or "an old school pal".
