This is how viral research has always been done. Is it a mistake to do it this way? I don't really know enough about it, but maybe, it certainly seems to be "research gone wrong" in Wuhan that got us into this whole mess...
Just saying, this is certainly nothing "new" they've been pissing about with viruses in labs for probably nearly 100 years, and manipulating them for decades.
