It was deeply flawed forensic evidence in the Sally Clark case that caused that travesty. It was the Royal Statistical Society, of which I am a fellow led the charge on that one to overturn a wrongful conviction. It was also flawed forensic science that wrongfully convicted the Birmingham Six. By just handling playing cards, they tested positive for handling explosives. Even today, if you eat a poppyseed cake or bagel you will test positive for heroin use. That has been proved on Mythbusters and Braniac.
Fans of the late John Mortimer's "Rumpole of the Bailey" should be able to recite the famous quote, "Better to let twelve guilty men go free, than to hang / convict an innocent man. For to hang an innocent man is to spit in the face of justice"
