anthem as Vietnam players proudly sing theirs with hands over hearts
- One critic claimed the 'ugly Americans' were 'showing their true colors'
- Six of 11 US players stayed silent and did not put their hands over their hearts
Much of the US women's soccer team remained silent during the playing of
The Star-Spangled Banner at Friday's World Cup opener in New Zealand,
prompting critics to excoriate players over a perceived lack of patriotism.
'The ugly Americans once again showing their true colors,' one person wrote
on Twitter. 'They could learn a thing or two from the Vietnamese.'
'Absolute disgrace to the US!!' added another. 'Ban them and get players that
are proud to represent their country.'
