You should leave your heating on a few hours a day while away in Winter dontchaknow Cherie! My mum learned this the hard way (in a rented house too, lolz) - went away for a week over winter, came back to burst pipes and the whole ceiling caved in. Two ceilings actually - pipes burst in the loft, ceiling caved into the upstairs bedroom, then through again to the living room. Tens of thousands of pounds of damage
