I'm very supportive of nuclear, despite having followed the Fukushima disaster pretty closely as it happened in Japanese media. All energy creation comes with risks. The more energy created, the more risks. It's good he's starting smaller. Politicians and citizens really don't want to be anywhere near nuclear, but it's dangerous to let the current plants run without replacement for so long. Especially since safer designs now exist. It's just getting them approved and built. One problem with Daiichi is that TEPCO recommissioned the plant past it's EOL date with falsified records. The design was so old, and that was its fatal flaw, as there was no way to cool down the reactors without a main power connection. Well, the tsunami had wiped out everything around the plant, so they didn't reconnect immediately and 3 reactors melted down as a result. English media didn't really cover this in detail, but in Japanese media it was very clear how very close it came to being disastrous for a lot of people. I want to say #1 was a 1st gen GE design. So the irony is as a result of people being afraid to build more nuclear, there's more incentives to push current reactors well beyond what their designs likely intended. Not the biggest fan of Bill Gates, but it's an important step.
