I agree that Social Media in this case is the tool that makes these very quick mass gatherings possible, and "SoMed mindset" is absolutely a part of the equation of what's going on with people, but I don't think it can be the whole story. We've had Social Media for more than 15 years at this point, and it's been very mainstream for at least 10... but the "riot for every story" trend seems to be massively increasing in pace in recent years. Probably since Covid-times. I think Covid regulations, and lockdown, perhaps had a marked and permanent effect on social psych in the west in some ways.

Lots of factors coming together but it's a scary trend. I don't imagine it's going to get better before it gets much worse.
