Problem with the US system is that while you can have a popular vote landslide... a landslide by the numbers that matter; remember Hillary beat Trump by nearly 3 million votes. Bush also (by a small margin, tbf) lost the popular vote in 2000, though he at least won it (by a similarly small margin) in 2004.
In theory, the whole of (say) California and New York state could vote Dem --every single eligible voter -- seeing Dems win the popular vote by a huge margin, and it would make no difference at all to the overall result.
Of course similar things happen here but I don't think it's as dramatic as the US. (Comparatively) tiny states can change the outcome for the entire country. It's mad.
