Hanah is intelligent and switched on. She speaks a lot of sense, and her intention in this case was to protect Lily’s feelings rather than exacerbate them at a moment of stress. That’s pretty sensitive, if you ask me, and just shows awareness and tact. The unfortunate thing is, Martha opens her mouth before thinking, and in doing so, can end up hurting people’s feelings and making them feel worse. Yes, Hanah’s delivery could have been calmer and less antagonistic, but the meaning of her words and the motives behind them remain the same. Her intentions were good.
