Could it not just be a metaphor for something else? Or maybe I've been studying too much English lately and am constantly looking for alternative meanings.

After all, every single Prophet has been said to have performed some sort of miracle. There has not been a prophet since the last Prophet Muhammad, so clearly we cannot speculate but simply choose whether or not we want to follow their teachings.
