I'm sure you'll actually understand why silence can't be taken as an admission of guilt, and shouldn't be legally considered one. That said, I thought "no plea entered" was possible in the UK so I don't know why it was taken as a not guilty plea, either, unless that's from a previous statement or something.

Note that in both of the above I'm not being "on his side", he obviously deserves to be locked away forever. Nor am I actually a huge fan of our legal system. But, let's not just throw out the established rules in a fit of rage without pausing to think.
