The issue with it back then was that is was used to explain same-sex attraction, effectively wiping out homosexuality.
Homosexuality was illegal, and so they ascribed gay men and lesbians as sexual inverts, effectively calling them heterosexuals because they basically said gay men were actually internally/mentally women and therefore were straight.
One issue we want to avoid nowadays is ensuring an effeminate gay teen isn't labelled trans when actually he's just a camp gay kid and the term sexual inverts was basically doing that as a blanket statement.
