The original meaning of the word meme, which was coined by Richard Dawkins; was to describe a phenomenon for things spreading through groups and across the world, that wasn't part of biology, but sort of worked in a similar way to genes (hence meme), and the initial example he gave was of people wearing baseball caps backwards.
I think these words follow the same principle, which is amplified by the internet and social media.
