Many people don't realize how much crime is in DC. My husband distinctly remembers being several blocks from a shooting on the steps of the one of the monuments when he was much younger. It's similar to Baltimore in that way that walking around there at night can be unsafe depending on where you are. Anyway, both cities are within driving distance and share similar problems with the working population easily making 6 figures, whereas you have a service class that hardly makes sh** and cost of living is very high in DC and in Central MD. There are bigger income disparities in that part of the US.

The difference here is DC doesn't have Statehood so he has more leeway to use federal resources to clean it out. The people protesting are probably considered a feature at this point, because they're bringing attention to issues in the city that most voters would care about if they were even aware. I've already seen a few clips come my way showing some of what was happening there and it's bad, but not something I'm surprised by given I knew this already...
