About your point on homophobia, a lot of people are homophobic because it goes against their beliefs or their religion (if they are religious), although it doesn't necessarily make it right. Others just jump onto the 'calling something gay' bandwagon without really realising what they're saying or what implications it might have on people around.
One thing that annoys me is when people automatically assume things, e.g. "x is gay therefore he fancies all men". Not true. Do all straight men fancy all women? Those types of people say things like "I'm not sharing a changing room with him, I'll have to keep my bum covered". Those people think too highly of themselves and lowly of people not like them.
I don't think homophobia is as bad as racism, its only because you experience homophobia that you think that. Some black people say that even when they walk down the street they get funny looks off people, and white people who have done the experiment of going outside in disguise as a black person have said the same. On the whole, people won't give you funny looks for being gay because most people won't even realise in the first place.
Some valid points though.
