Perhaps Jen has told him of the complications. I'm sure he knows of her child and that she was married. To be honest, I don't think he's interested in a long-term thing anyway: just someone in the house. I think he's assuming she isn't with anyone (which is the impression anyone would get), and has been through a lot, but doesn't realise she's going through the process at the moment. In fact, I doubt any other housemate is aware.
