It’s all the ‘holier than thou’ attitudes of everyone thinking they’re right and everyone else is wrong that promotes the divides and leads to the hostility that exists between different faiths.

I agree with your comments. It's much better to carry out one's faith and set an example that way, rather than set about 'preaching' in all the wrong ways. Making bold statements to people who may well not be interested at all is included, and if anything it puts them off.
However, he has apologised now - so it's probably best to let it drop.
