No they weren't worse. Science shouldn't have stolen those things, Roberto shouldn't have tipped the food over Max (and I wanted Roberto to win) and Vanessa shouldn't have chickened out of the task. But none of those things are as bad as sprinkling scabs in someone's food and potentially making them ill. None of those things would have hurt anybody, whereas Maxwell's disgraceful actions could have made someone ill. I would rather have my food stolen or tipped over my head than eat food with scabs in it. And I would have rather done the task than eat food with scabs in it. I really don't see how Maxwell's actions can be justified in any way at all.
