You simply don't make ignorant comments that can easily be intepreted as racist when you possess racial awareness. This guy is not only thick, but a racist bully, and he certainly wouldn't say that to a black person on the street. Of course it was racist. Would he have made the same comment had Derek been white? Of course not, he was purely making reference to Derek's colour.
