It is very real but the Government are using it to make the money out of the situation. There are simple policy changes they could put in place to reduce carbon emissions and that would save people money and save lives, i.e lowering the national speed limit by 10 mph.
Recently due the high cost of petrol (made worse by the government fuel duty) I have been driving my car at 60 mph rather than normal motor way speeds. What I have found instead of getting 39 mpg I now getting 45 mpg. Which means I can do an extra 6 miles for every gallon so on a 90 mile trip I'm producing 15% less carbon emissions than before.
Also I have noticed by moving to the country my car on short trips is doing around 38 mpg rather than the 29 mpg I was getting in the city.
