GCSE's are irrelevant to both of those Universities. (Generally though you'll need above C's in English, Maths and Science). However, this is just so they know you're competent and compliant.
Focus on your main GCSE's, but mainly focus on your AS levels, and A Levels (including the choice of which ones you do... both Newcastle and B'ham are top Universities and so consider some A Levels such as ICT, Media Studies etc to not be 'suitable' to some courses).
