Rumpole used to have a saying about it better for 12 guilty to go free than to convict an innocent for that would be spitting in the face of justice.
However it seems to be
"It is far better to hang draw and quarter 12 innocent men and women, than to let one toe-rag off, for to let a toe-rag off would be to spit in the face of all Daily Mail Readers"
