I actually thought her tears were genuine; she looked very disappointed when she saw who was giving her message even though she grinned through it so as not to lose face in front of the others.
I think what you all say about her lying too much is very valid [boy crying wolf etc] but please recall that she lies, and then tell US that she lies. We know she is lying; it is deliberate and very much like an actor in a play who tells the audience something but not the other characters in the play [like Hamlet saying he’s going to kill Claudius]. She clearly sees this as a ‘performance’ and she is acting to get to the prize and I think she is playing the game very well, annoying though it may be. We, the audience, also can usually tell when she is lying because she’ll have a twinkle in her eye or the lie is so ridiculous it has to be a lie.
Some of the stuff is real, of course and I think her tears then were real, even if she had no intention of leaving, she was in need of reassurance and we all need that at times.
