You're right in the way that people can ignore them - but sometimes, we hardly can and I can see why some people feel isolated by reading them.
Then again, it's all the group thingy going on, it's no big deal but I can see why some people get upset with some pointless threads.
TIBB became a mess since the end of BB:CH, I am not giving names but I have my views on the subject.

Why are these "new" groups any different to the ones you have said you were in?
