I think you're right; we do need a format change. The constant petty arguing between Simon and Louis is undermining the show.

Cowell has been in the industry so long that everybody believes what say's without question. Especially the press and most of the public. That is why he is so able to destroy the other acts and undermine public confidence in them. I would even go as far as he has the contacts to do the same things to the other judges. Look at the stories in the press having ago at Danni recently.
You're right Cowell is basically a looks like a patronising hypocrite on the x-factor because of his conflict in interests in the show. At the audition stage he wants the best acts on the show but when we get to the live stage of the show he wants his acts to win even if they are aren't the best in the show.
I think the x-factor started out as talent show, but over the years it has become just another game show. Maybe it is time for a name change to reflect the change in the show. How about
"X-Factor - The Fight of the Mentors"
