Default Gamestop to save Woolies?

US retailer GameStop is reportedly making a bid for Woolworths.

The video games retailer has put forward a bid for half of the 815 stores, which would make it the UK’s largest specialist games retailer ahead of GAME.

A source told MCV: “GAME frustrated GameStop when it bought GameStation. Bosses at GameStop had pretty much given up on launching a UK assault - but now, thanks to Woolies, that door is open again. They’re up against other bidders, but they’ll fight tooth and nail.”

Woolworths hit the headlines when it went into administration last week, with reports that Theo Paphitis and several supermarket chains were keen on buying up stores.

Although GameStop currently has stores in Birmingham, Stockport and Eire, GAME and GameStation currently dominate the high street.
