That's what annoys me the most about chart music. There are so many people who SOLELY listen to it, and therefore the majority of really good music that doesn't have much hype/charts badly gets forgotten about. IMO, most of the top 10 nowadays is rubbish, and the better songs ARE the ones that flop. I feel like most music made by mainstream artists is just there TO chart.. like the artists don't care how the music sounds or how good it is as long as it gets them in that chart? Sure, I listen to some of the music I'd class under this category, but I'd never call it 'good music'.
Kelly Clarkson is THE perfect example. She released Breakaway, directed mostly by her record company and it was a worldwide success. She chose to take direction of My December, produced the music she wanted and it flopped, however, the music was some of the best she ever produced. Just because the music wasn't 'radio/chart-friendly', it didn't sell. One thing that really annoys me is artists who put nothing into their songs. Someone who turns up and just sings doesn't deserve anything IMO. If they've written some of the lyrics, all the lyrics, or even produced/created the whole song [like most bands do nowadays], then that's deserved. I'd feel absolutely crushed if I put all my heart into creating a song, for it to get beaten by someone who sung a few notes.
At the end of the day, I wouldn't call anyone's music taste bad unless mine was attacked, but I do have a strong opinion about music/artists nowadays, and I will say how I feel about the music/artists. People are going to like what they like, I wouldn't say 'you can't like so and so cos it's crap'. Most of the time, on this forum, I'm in the minority, however off the forum, with my mates/bf/family, I'd be in the majority. It depends who you're around.

i think you've got the Kelly Clarkson thing wrong.Breakaway was massive in the US - 6 million copies & 5 massive radio hits.when she returned with My December there was a huge hype.Never Again did good but the other singles flopped, not because it wasnt radio friendly, because people simply didnt like it - thats why the album failed to reach 1 million.
i agree though that people shouldnt base their opinion on a song by its chart position.
