You sort of responded to your own quesiton. People put down these films because they are marmite films. Some people love them, the majority of people over the age of twenty hate them. The film industry needs to churn out video game adaptations that appeal beyond the actual market said game has, in order to be accepted. Right now video game movies are sort of the in-joke of Hollywood.
