Chapter 2

The Pub was awfully quiet. It's tavern-style make-over had actually turned out for the worst. Linda remembered a time when she'd come into this lovely little pub years ago. It was always so busy. The bar staff seemed to be a little quieter than the last people who'd worked here before - but they were nice. Linda took a small drink of her champaigne and waited for her darling husband to turn up. As she waited for him, she looked around the place which had been her local for many years. It's old wooden furniture made it look older than it actually was. The enterance was to the left hand side of where Linda sat. It was quite drafty near the door, but Linda liked being somewhere near the exit. Across from her was a man, he'd been in the pub before. His head stuck in a newspaper as it always was. He always wore a berret-style hat and wore glassed. It was strange, but Linda thought of him as a respectful old man - yet from what she'd heard, he was only 36.

The door to the far right opened and Linda's husband appeared. His name was Ian, and he was Linda's true love - despite the fact that he irritated her at times. His small frame made Linda wonder why her kids had turned out rather tall. She wasn't tall and neither was he. He sat down with and sighed. "So, here's to our new home" he said gently as he raised his glass of larger in the air. Linda smiled and raised hers too. As she drank some more, she thought about the house which she soon would call home - was it in the right place? It's right near her Mother's home; she'd be round everday with that little white dog of hers. As Linda started to think more, the pub doors swung open and a young man appeared in the doorway. He seemed frightened.

Linda recognised the man immediatly - it was Ben, the builder. He was very pale and was sweating, which was very unsual for him. "Mr and Mrs Banks? L-listen...it's important...listen..." Linda looked at Ben with a slight shocked look on her face "What's wrong Ben?" she spoke softly. She caught a glimpse of her husband - who had a slight mocking grin on his face. "The...house...i c - can't go to it anymore! L - little girls...crying..." As he spoke, Linda felt a hint of unrealism hit her. "I told you we shouldn't of hired the kids - they drink on the job. Go home son and we'll get someone else to do the job" said Ian. Linda didn't understand - Ben seemed to be so calm and cool, very pleasant with her. Ben looked at Ian with a huge rush of fury on his face "That land is haunted, i'm telling you. There is something wrong...won't you listen to me?". As Ben spoke, Ian burst into a fit of laughter. His face seemed to become a little larger than usual. Linda looked around as the small pub members looked on with a slight smile on their faces. "Mrs Banks, you'll understand, tell him that i'm telling truth" said Ben. Ian stood up and told Ben to leave. Ben's face dropped as he turned around to leave the pub. He caught Linda's eye's before he left - the disappointed look made Linda feel really guilty that she didn't believe him - but it did sound stupid. Linda pulled her gaze away from Ben and took another sip of her drink - as she looked back he had gone.

"I told you; no more kids" said Ian inconsiderably. Linda looked at Ian and smiled "Yeah - no more kids".
