Teacher made John sit next to David. David was astounded as he walked towards his desk and sat down. Was it right, he thought to himself, to feel like this? His heart had started pumping and his hands were sweaty. John looked at David with little interest, and sat, composed. Teacher told the class that John had been moved from an English school to be with his mother, whom had recently been taken to a Parisien hospital for Consumption when she was visiting France. Through the lesson David's thoughts were occupied with strange fantasies and strange feelings he'd never encountered before.
"I'm David" he had said to John as the lesson ended. John stared at him;
"Hello." (Even his French had an aristocratic air.)
"I moved - I moved here a year ago and I - I uhm..." David was finding it hard to talk. Already René was feigning an interest on the new boy from the other side of the room, and approached.
"Hello, John was it?"
"Indeed... who are you?"
They started talking, and David walked away. He'd had his first chance at a friend for the first time since he had moved to this wretched school. He kicked a brick outside the classroom, but immediately started whining in pain. As he sat down he started to think. The surge of love that he'd felt, his nervous demeanor, the sweaty palms... It had to mean something. But, not in that way. David just wasn't like that. The amount of times he'd thought of Simone proved that. At least, he thought it did. He thought of Teacher and Alexander. No, he definitely wasn't like that.
