As far as I know Shell is planning to return to her 'normal' life - with a bit of celebrity thrown in. She went to New York so she could get experience for a 'normal' career and continue with her PHD, I don't think she would have done that if she was not serious about returning to studying.
However, I also think she enjoys the parties and other bennefits from being a celebrity. (getting into the 'golden circle' at Live 8 for example). As far an the friendship with Vanessa is concerned, I think it is a genuine friendship. Vanessa is a very strong character - like Scott - and that appeal to Shell, which might explain it, although she is a strong character herself she also needs the support of strong friends around her.
I also think their friendship is mutually benneficial for their model careers - but I hope Shell isn't drawn into it too much, I like her the way she is. A long reply I know - but you did aske my opinion.

I admit I am not a Shell fan but am glad to hear she will continue with her PHD. She did seem to get enormous enjoyment from her studies. Shame about her and Scott, I hope they will remain close.
