I have been in audiences where there is a runner that holds up a placard up telling you to cheer or laugh or rapturous applause etc.
I dont have experience no, but i would imagine it is true. After all, the whole audience always cheers when charlie is mentioned. He is popular, but not that popular.

I would imagine they are told not to boo people, it may upset the kiddiewinkles who watch it.
