You are not Charlie, people react in different ways. Just because you wanted to be with your mum doesn't mean that is the moral high point, it doesn't make you more caring nor he less.
His mum is semi unresponsive, but she can still speak, and recognise faces, and sometimes even walk, she's not about to die, and she has family around her taking care of her. Do you expect him to live at home for the rest of his life, and be housebound? No, then this is just like that.

If he cared for his mother so much he would after all he made it his buisness to tell everyone in the house about her so i presume he does care about her.
