No, I agree with you all, it is self inflicted. It's also a disease though. Alcoholics usually leave a legacy of waste and misery to their nearest and dearest.
He was an early casualty of being a very naive young lad suddenly being told he was amazing and fantastic, lots of money (nothing like today though) women throwing themselves at him etc. Basically he was a kid in a sweet shop.
Terrible to see his decline I agree. I saw him playing live at Nottingham Forest in 1968. We beat Man U 2-1 -those were the days! We all treated him like a popstar. We were right at the front of the crowd, and he leant on the flimsy boarding in front of us to adjust his shoe. He was stunningly good looking, fantastic eyes. My friend fainted when he winked at us! Oh, and as for the football well, he was magnificent. Poetry in motion.
I would be very surprised if he pulls through this time.
