Big Brother switch-on for hi-tech bird camera
A seabird colony is to have a hi-tech Big Brother camera trained on it.
It will allow wildlife lovers to follow the activities of birds and seals from the mainland.
Big Brother contestant Elizabeth Woodcock is to switch it on today.
The camera is on the Isle of May, off the coast at North Berwick.
It is identical to those used in the Channel 4 show.
The Scottish Seabird Centre has invested £100,000 in the development.
It is hoped it will boost visitors during the winter months and generate £700,000 of expenditure in the local area.
The camera can be moved around and operated from the centre, allowing viewers to study the wildlife in detail without disturbing it.
It is solar-powered, waterproof and capable of rotating nearly 360 degrees, with images beamed by microwave technology across the 12 miles separating the island from the shore.
The Isle of May is a national nature reserve owned by Scottish Natural Heritage and home to 50,000 puffins, as well as cliff nesting birds such as razorbills, kittiwakes and shags.
The island is also home to one of the largest grey seal colonies in Britain.
Tom Brock, director of the Scottish Seabird Centre, said: "The Isle of May project will ensure that the centre becomes a successful year-round national tourist attraction, where people can experience the changes in nature throughout the seasons."
