No, he was just doing it for the same reason Marcus does anything and everything - to make Marcus look cool, tough, smart, better than everyone else, manipulate or one-up someone.

The most likely explanation is that he was intending to hang on to them until everyone ran out (if they did) and then make a great big deal about how he is such a mental genius with such amazing powers that "I knew this would happen.. I absolutely KNEW it!".
Then make a very big deal about how he could have swapped them but he sacrificed that and will give them cigarettes.
Hopefully avoiding nomination for his great amazing act.
