I know exactly what you mean, and it makes a lot of sense.
Her lack of inner beauty DOES make her outer self so unattractive,like you say, her scowling, because she is not only scowling with her face ,but with her heart and soul.
This is why, as the public didn't see her duplicitous side to begin with, she seemed a very attractive and nice person who loved people and trees and the whole earth.
