I like taking candid photos of people too. I use a camera with a screen that can flip up so you can use it as a waistlevel viewfinder. You can also buy a flip up screen to attach to compacts. This makes it less obvious that you are taking a photo, so people won't be bothered or give you funny looks. One of the greatest photographers of all time, Henri Cartier Bresson, took excellent street photos/candids of people.
