He was definitely exaggerating when he said that, because I've never seen even one picture, video or performance from the 1980s in which he's been wearing heels. There's one video in which he's wearing Cuban heeled boots, but that's because the video has a flamenco / Latin American vibe to it, which doesn't really count. In fact, the earliest picture I've seen of him wearing anything with an obvious heel was on the cover of a single he did in 1994 called
Sex Drive with an Italian (I think) production team called Glam.
