He had the misfortune of winning before Leona, after she won the way the winners were treated was different. He's only really had one album as his first was a covers album and his second did decently but he had to compete with Leona which made him look worse.

I don't feel sorry for him as he still has an album coming out and a record contract but he must be a bit bitter over it all.

The thing with the female singers is probably to do with the fact that for the past few years the ladies have been doing well in the industry, plus Leona and Alex both had a niche that was really prominent so it made it easier to choose a direction for them and market them as such.

If we look at the male winners with the exception of 1 or 2, none of them really have a direction. Steve was generic, Shayne did repetitive pop/R'n'B and whatever was the flavour of the month. Leon had a direction but they tried to make his swing style into something that would be successful in the singles charts which it would never be as it's not compatible with most of the main audience that buys singles (I.E teenagers/young people). Joe's gonna be interesting and I can see why Simon wants to take him to America as they'd eat up a 'disney'-esque star or whatever he wants to do with Joe. It'll be intriguing to see if he's a success here though, considering the size of the audience that watched the final and the number of votes I'd probably say so.
