I think "Mothers Day" is nice. Even if you are skint, you can still afford a card, and it's nice to receive a card.
I don't buy into the commercialism of most of these 'days'. I don't feel obliged to buy a huge bunch of flowers or chocolates or whatever. Some years I buy my mum a nice gift and some years I just buy her a card. Usually it depends on financial circumstances.
My kids are still quite young, and often make me a card. I like that. I don't expect gifts, but I like that they spent time and effort on making me something, even if my hands end up covered in crepe paper, glitter and glue as soon as I try to open it! I still love it - It's a mum thing.
