In Scotland Gaelic is taught widely in the highlands. Not necessarily to be spoken but to understand the landscape. Most of the scenery has Gaelic names, especially hills, mountains, rivers, valleys etc. without a good grounding in Gaelic you would be lost in your own country. I would imagine ditto in Ireland.
