I think one thing we need to define is ICON, take the noughties it was typically dominated by rap/R'n'B/Hip Hop ETC so a lot of mainstream icons will be people from that genres, but you also got to consider the fact that indie music resurged again so you'll have a few icons like Arctic Monkeys (there's better examples I know) that were either indie, started off as indie or had an indie styling.

Icon is a word that can be thrown around a lot easily but greatness can only be achieved through longevity, if anybody's music from this generation remains relevant and good in 20 years time then there'll abviously be more of a case of them being great.

I don't think I made much sense but there you go.
