Although it's fairly clear from watching High Plains Drifter that the character played by Clint Eastwood is indeed that of the Marshall, who had been shot down by three killers while the cowardly citizens watched on, I like to think that he had made a pact with the Devil himself in order to come back to reek revenge. That's the beauty of all of Eastwood's films and of the Devil himself I suppose. Like Spacey said in the Usual Suspects, " the greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world that he didn't exist". Love the ambiguity and prevailing sense of doom and dread that permeates this flick, and Eastwood plays the demonic, nasty and vicious apparition with a cruel delight. So yeah, I'll go for that one, even though I suppose it's cheating cuz we'll never really know who or what he is.
