It got axed because of "compliance", i.e. censorship by the broadcaster (Channel 4).
C4 didn't want the extra costs of employing a team of people to monitor everything that was broadcast as live, 24/7. That's why they only give us the sleeping shift which is post-watershed, very little happening and very few folks still up to watch it. But they can say "there is live feed".
The 24/7 live feed was the main innovative point of the show. Without it you have Shipwrecked in a house with ugly people.
